Accuplacer

New incoming students with no placement scores are required to take the Accuplacer prior to class registration. If you have already taken college-level English or math, you are not required to take the Accuplacer for the subject areas that you have already taken college-level courses. If you are unsure if you need to take the Accuplacer, please call 985-448-7912 for clarification BEFORE registering.

The Accuplacer is delivered in a multiple choice and written essay format. Most students complete the test within 2.5 to 3 hours. The multiple choice test is adaptive. Accuplacer determines which questions will be given next based upon previous answers. This provides a more accurate method of measuring an individual student’s skill levels than a general test. It also means that no two tests taken are precisely the same. You are encouraged to give each question as much thought as you wish before selecting your final answer. Your scores will determine which English and math courses you are eligible to take.

The Accuplacer has four components:

  • Reading Comprehension: Questions measure reading skills, such as identifying the main idea and making inferences, through the comprehension of short passages.
  • Writing: Questions measure understanding of sentence structure and grammar.
  • WriterPlacer (taken in conjunction with Writing):  Assesses writing skills to include the following six characteristics:
    • Purpose and Focus – The extent to which you present information in a unified and coherent manner, clearly addressing the issue.
    • Organization and Structure – The extent to which you order and connect ideas.
    • Development and Support – The extent to which you develop and support ideas.
    • Sentence Variety and Style – The extent to which you craft sentences and paragraphs demonstrating control of vocabulary, voice, and structure.
    • Mechanical Conventions – The extent to which you express ideas using Standard Written English.
    • Critical Thinking – The extent to which you communicate a point of view and demonstrate reasoned relationships among ideas.
  • Mathematics: Questions range from Arithmetic, Elementary Algebra to college-level mathematics and measure a range of math skills from basic arithmetic concepts and operations to college-level math concepts. You will begin with one section and, depending on your performance, may advance to another section.

Students are allowed two retakes of the Accuplacer with a minimum of 14 days between test dates. Students are allowed to retake one, two, or all three components.

There is a limit of 1 test session per day for all exams.

Attention LPN Admission Students: LPN admission students are ONLY required to take Math & Writing (NO WriterPlacer) with the following minimum passing scores: Math – 250 and Writing – 250.
