Program Overview

Fletcher Technical Community College's Welding program provides students with an understanding of the various processes and techniques of welding including oxyfuel cutting, carbon arc cutting, shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, flux-cored arc welding, gas metal arc welding, pipe welding, and plasma arc cutting.

Salary & Career Outlook

The program reviews the necessary skills designated by the American Welding Society (AWS) and prepares students for the AWS entry-level test.  Welding is a specialized skill and offers career opportunities that include:
     -working in welding shops
     -manufacturing of metal goods
     -pipe welding
     -plant maintenance

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that as of May 2008, Welders and Cutters earned an average annual base salary between $22,570 and $50,700.  Job growth and the demand for skilled welders in the oil and gas industry are excellent and many employers in South Louisiana report difficulty finding trained workers.
