Grainger Awards Scholarships to Fletcher Students

Awards $2,000 Scholarship to Increase Skilled Employees in Industrial Trades

Houma, LA November 9, 2011 - Chris Nolan and Bruce Harding, Electrical students at Fletcher, were recently awarded $2,000 scholarships by Grainger, a local distributor of facilities maintenance supplies supporting the Houma area for more than 34 years.

Chris Nolan and Bruce Harding are two of 200 students in the U.S. offered the Grainger Tools for Tomorrow® scholarship this year. When Chris and Bruce graduate from Fletcher, they also will receive a customized Westward® toolkit from Grainger, valued at more than $1,000.

"Today's Fletcher students will become tomorrow's industrial skilled tradesmen, dedicated to keeping the Houma community working and growing," said Donald Alphonso, manager of Grainger's branch in Houma. "One of the best ways to invest in Houma is to contribute to the education of our future tradesmen and women."

There is a growing gap between industry's workforce needs and the skills of job seekers. Grainger, in conjunction with the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), launched the Grainger Tools for Tomorrow® scholarship program in 2006. The program is designed to help students in the industrial skilled trades curriculum who have demonstrated drive, commitment and leadership realize their educational and career goals. The program awards outstanding students at 100 selected AACC member colleges across the country with a $2,000 scholarship and, upon completion of the student's technical education program, the customized Westward® toolkit to help support them in their future career. For the 2011 - 2012 academic year, one-half of the Grainger Tools for Tomorrow® scholarships, 100 awards, are specifically targeted to military veterans in recognition of their service to our country.
